It is our goal that all pupils who study Mathematics at Mallaig High demonstrate increasing sophistication and independence in their ability to demonstrate, link, transfer and apply the following skills in a range of increasingly challenging contexts:
• select and communicate processes and solutions
• justify choice of strategy used
• link mathematical concepts
• use mathematical vocabulary and notation
• use mental agility
• reason algebraically
• determine the reasonableness of a solution.

Pupils all have access to Complete Maths Tutor. This provides them with a personalised learning journey that adapts to their current and emerging needs.
Homework will sometimes be set through Complete Maths.
Tasks linked to number, geometry, algebra and statistics topics.
Instructional videos help guide pupils through topics they are finding difficult.
Homework will sometimes be set through MathsPad.
Diagnostic Questions assess pupil understanding and identify gaps in knowledge. This allows us to plan their next steps effectively.
Pupils can search for and complete quizzes at home as part of their independent learning.
Pupils are expected to take a proactive approach to learning, identifying targets for improvement and strategies to facilitate this.
This involves a strong commitment to independent study - particularly at senior level. We would recommend that pupils engage with the following:-
Maths Support (Wednesday 16:00 - 17:00 & Thursday 16:00 - 17:00)
Regular exam question practice:
Dynamic Maths, where pupils can find exam questions divided by topic area: Dynamic Maths
SQA Past Papers: SQA - Past papers
Scholar: a really useful resource for National 5 Mathematics/Applications of Mathematics and Higher Mathematics/Applications of Mathematics: Scholar Login
N5/Higher Study Pack: a wealth of resources including questions by topic area with worked solutions. This is password protected (password shared on Google Classroom).
We view homework as a highly valuable tool and have high expectations regarding its completion. Homework is set on a weekly basis and allows for spaced retrieval. Spaced retrieval is the revisiting of prior topics at a later date to consolidate what has been learnt and serves to commit knowledge to long-term memory.
Homework structure is as follows:
Juniors: two pages from their homework booklet to be completed weekly.
Seniors: class dependent but usually a mix of practice questions, MathsPad tasks, Maths Tutor tasks or past-paper question booklets. Where no specific homework has been set, seniors are expected to review weekly content.
Staff will aim to support with homework at all times but this support should be sought in advance of the hand-in date.
Homework that is not completed in a timely manner or where repeated offences occur will be followed up with a Maths detention on Tuesday lunchtime.
