Why History?
History aims to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past in Scotland and the wider world. It is more than a collection of dates; it is the story of humanity. By studying the lives of diverse people and the process of change over time, pupils develop their own identity and a deeper understanding of the world they live in today.
What do we Study at BGE?
S1: Historians Toolkit, Otzi the Iceman, Scottish Wars of Independence, Witchcraft and the French Revolution.
S2: Medieval Castles, History of Medicine, The Tudors, Days that Shook the World.
S3: Scotland and the First World War, Srebrenica (Holocaust Memorial Day) and the Civil Rights Movement in the USA.
What do we Study at Senior Phase?
National 4/5: The Trade in Enslaved African People 1770-1807, Hitler and Nazi Germany 1919-1939, Migration and Empire 1830-1939.
Higher: Britain 1851-1951, The Cold War 1945-1989, Migration and Empire 1830-1939.
Advanced Higher: Germany: from democracy to dictatorship 1918–1939.
What are our some of our Skill Goals?
Develop Chronological Understanding: Gain a "mental timeline" of significant events, from local history to ancient civilisations and global empires.
Historical Enquiry: Learn to ask perceptive questions and use primary and secondary sources to investigate the past.
Critical Reasoning: Learning to distinguish between fact, opinion, and bias—a vital skill in the modern world.
